More Votes Cast in Democratic Primary Than Republican Primary in MN-01

Democratic primary voters outpaced Republican primary voters in Minnesota’s First District, according to near-final results from the Minnesota Secretary of State. The results show 57,761 votes were cast in the DFL congressional primary in MN-01 on Tuesday, compared to 56,062 in the Republican primary. This was the most votes cast in a Democratic congressional primary in this district on record since at least the 1970s.

That happened in a district that President Trump won by 12 points in 2024 — all while the Democratic nominee spent virtually nothing on paid media for the primary election. In most Republican-held battleground districts nationally that had a contested primary this cycle, more voters turned out for the Republican than the Democrat. But not in MN-01.

"The people of southern Minnesota are sending a message," said Jake Johnson. "Costs keep going up, and our congressman won't even hold a town hall to hear about our concerns here at home, but he always has time to meet with the corporate CEOs who bankroll his campaigns. Nearly 50,000 people showed up yesterday to cast their ballot for a representative who will listen, show up, and fight to make life more affordable here in southern Minnesota. That's what this campaign is about, and it's how we rebuild the American Dream for the next generation."
