Jake Johnson Slams New Tariffs on Prescription Drugs: “It Feels Like Groundhog Day”

Last night, the President announced new tariffs on generic drugs, set at 100% starting in 2028 and rising to 200% a year later. The announcement came just one day after the President announced a new 50% tariff on Canadian goods, which Jake criticized yesterday.

"So many folks around here are already struggling to afford the medications they need to live their lives," said Jake Johnson. "It feels like Groundhog Day: for the second morning in a row, southern Minnesotans are waking up to news of sweeping new tariffs that will raise costs for us, while Brad Finstad and the rest of Congress refuse to fulfill their constitutional duty to set tariff policy for our nation. If I were in Congress, I would vote to end these tariffs and bring down costs for families here at home."

Seniors and families on fixed incomes rely most heavily on these low-cost generics, and rural pharmacies across southern Minnesota are already operating on thin margins. Meanwhile, Finstad has voted repeatedly to keep tariffs in place, and the tariffs already in effect are costing the average American household more than $1,700 per year.

Jake, a local math teacher who takes no corporate PAC money, has pledged to vote to end the tariffs, reassert Congress's authority over tariffs and trade policy, and lower the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs.
